Colorado and New Mexico Trip Part II

As I detailed in Part I of this writeup, I travelled down last week from Denver to Colorado Springs to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, and got to the dunes around sunset last Thursday.  That night, I stayed in Monte Vista, CO, at the Best Western Movie Manor, where you can watch drive in movies from your room (Jenna Spevack had told me about this place). Despicable Me was on that night:

The moon was setting over the mountains when I arrived:

That night also happened to be the peak night of the Perseids meteor shower, so after the movie ended I went out again with the camera and saw a bunch of meteors (and the milky way!):

The next morning I headed down through a beautiful drive to Chama, New Mexico, my 49th State (and the whole continental US)!

Along the way, I passed cows:

The Cumbres & Toltec coal-powered steam train:

I had lunch in Chalma, and then headed towards Taos, passing the hippie housing Earthship community which I had seen in the documentary Garbage Warrior.

I crossed the Rio Grande again:

After a nice dinner at Doc Martins' in Taos I headed out again to catch the golden hour.

I ended up accidentally heading down a steep dirt road into the Rio Grande gorge and emerged out the other side, miles south of Taos, where I caught this shot:

I ended the day with a Margarita at the Alley Cantina; more in Part III.
