Two IP Addresses On One Machine

In my classes I constantly say how important it is that each device on a network has a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address. Don’t tell my students, but for more advanced applications it’s often very useful for a machine to have two IP addresses on the same interface, and this is possible to do on both Windows and Apple machines. Why would you want to do this? A good example is configuring something where you have to change an IP address from its default in one subnet to another in a different subnet. Here’s an example of where two IP addresses is very useful when configuring Beckhoff I/O devices.

On a PC, it’s hidden under the advanced features when configuring the IP address:

When configured, both IP addresses will show up in IPConfig:

Thanks to Sam Kusnetz for this captures from an Apple machine:

Special thanks to Jim Janninck for pointing out that this is possible.
