Flash Flood Emergency in NYC

As a storm chaser I've driven a lot in (around) flooding conditions; I've even been trapped in a tornado warning in a town in Iowa where every exit out of the town was flooded. But I did not anticipate how crazy it would get last night. I went out chasing after work just in case of that one in a million chance see a tornado crossing from Staten Island, and thought I would stick around and shoot some lightning after and then navigate home around any flooding. I eventually ended up on the pier by the Brooklyn Army Terminal in nearly whiteout (blackout) conditions, and then decided to head home. As I turned off the pier saw a torrent of water shooting up out of manhole covers along 2nd ave, and drove along that and it just went downhill from there.

Here’s my dashcam video:

Here’s that crazy flooding on Second Avenue in Brooklyn:

Here’s more of that onramp flooding on the belt parkway.

I glad I know this area pretty well or this would have been really scary. I'm lucky though because I live up on a hill and my place is dry; my thoughts are with those dealing with flooding or other loss today.
