MIDI 2.0

MIDI was first released in the 1980s; because it was used widely on shows in the early days I cover it in my book Show Networks and Control Systems.

Over the years, there have been many attempts to update or expand it, but it looks like the current updating effort is moving forward.

Personally, I rarely use MIDI for anything in show control these days; and when I do use it, it’s just for simple things like using a MIDI device as an input. Current MIDI technology does all I need for that. However, for musical applications there could be some benefits in the new version. You can read more about it here from the MMA; Reverb also has an article here.
