Major Blog and Website Update

I’ve had a website on Squarespace since 2008. Overall it’s great, but (admittedly in the name of Innovation) Squarespace has a terrible habit of leaving their users in a dead end. They did this to me back in 2012 when they moved from V5 to V6, marooning some of my content so badly I had to tweet at the then CEO. It took me six months to get that resolved. They moved from V6 to V7 without too much hassle, and then in early 2020, they introduced 7.1 with NO UPGRADE PATH. This meant that I had over 1000 blog entries back 15 years and no way to move them. I ignored this for a while but then I realized I was at a dead end, and trying to move things (and consolidate my external photo site) around it became time to bite the bullet. Fortunately I found a blog-saving third party solution to that (more on that later), and you are looking at the new site on V7.1.

it’s a big update on the back end and there are some real improvements, but there are some issues:

  • Idiotically, blog entries viewed individually do not show the year. This is infuriating but there is no solution for this except via some external java script but for that, you stupidly need to pay quite a bit more the “business” plan. This site is a big archive for me and I have posts going back to at least 2009, so for now if you want to know the year of a blog entry you have to look at the URL. The URL for almost all of my posts starts with the year.

  • Broken links. Not all the links (and especially some of the previously embedded documents) have transferred over. I’m working on this, but if you find a broken link or missing document please let me know via the contact form.

I added an index on the site search page if you want to browse way back in time.

If you find any other issues, please let me know!
